In the spring of 2017 the Colorado Society of Mayflower Descendants will award $1620.00 scholarships to a high school senior planning to attend any accredited college, university, or vocational institution during the 2016-17 academic year.  The award monies will be sent directly to the winner’s educational institution. One honorable mention winner will be awarded $400.

Applicants must be residents of the State of Colorado and citizens of the United States.  Criteria for selection include:  a short written essay on the Mayflower on the topic listed in the application, GPA and class rank (including weighted standardized test scores), ACT or SAT scores, evidence of honors received, activities in and outside of high school, employment and leadership, a letter of recommendation, and (if pertinent) evidence of Mayflower ancestry.  To be considered completed applications must be postmarked by 1 February 2017.

"It is 1627, and you are seventeen years old, living in Plymouth Colony.  Write a letter (maximum of 750 words) to a friend or relative  living either in the Netherlands or England, describing your new home and the living conditions of your friends in the Colony.  Even though your essay will have fictional elements, you are expected to use and cite references to document the conditions in Plymouth at that time,"
Essays will be evaluated for content, organization, style, and grammar. All entries must be typewritten and sources cited in appropriate bibliographic style.
